COMPETA A MAGNET FOR ARTIST

A recently compiled web site –competaart.com – features at least 23 practising artists/craftsmen living in and around this beautiful mountain pueblo. The pueblo already had a rich heritage of folk music, dance, song; embroidery and lace-making with craftsmen working in wood, metal, ceramics and country crafts. It is a village of young people too, with many weddings, baptisms, first communicants. There are children everywhere. The whole place throbs with life.

Little wonder then that, initially attracted by the marvellous Mediterranean light and overwhelmed by the beauty of the surrounding sierra and majestic mountains, artists from all parts of the world choose to settle here or stay for several months each year. They are made very welcome by the Cómpetanians who being creative themselves appreciate creativity in others. “¡Qué imaginación!”

After only one year in office the Alcalde, welcoming these artists and appreciating the contribution they make to life in the pueblo, initiated a series of Exhibitions at the Casa de la Cultura, the third of which will be held later this month of October. Four diverse artists have come together. There is something for everyone to appreciate, wonder at and talk about.
What´s more, with advance notification of groups of 10 or more, one at least of the artists will be present to answer questions or talk about their work. This is an amazing opportunity for any group or society looking for an informal ´item´ on its social calendar. Early evening open hours are such that after visiting the exhibition there is still lots of time to eat in the many bars and restaurants. If a large group can only arrange a morning visit it may be possible to organize a special opening time for them.

Other exhibitions will be held each month culminating in a special event during Easter week (when Cómpetanians perform a moving and colorful Passion Play on Good Friday morning)
For 2 days artists open up their homes and studios to visitors, an initiative set up for the first time this Easter by the artists themselves. This was so successful that it will become a regular feature in the artistic and cultural life of Cómpeta.

There can be no doubt that Cómpeta attracts more resident and visiting artists than any other pueblo in the Axarquía and you can see the reason why.
