“Chico” The shops Mascott!

It’s here! Competa’s First Charity Shop!

The concept of the charity shop is a familiar one in the UK, but here in Spain we’ve a long way to go before the charity shop becomes a regular feature of the high street. But that’s all changing up here in the mountains – Competa’s first charity shop has arrived!

The shop is located at Avenida de la Constitucion 59, opposite the school, next to the gymnasium. We’re hoping that this new initiative will encourage you all to have a good rummage through your cupboards and bring your unwanted goods to the shop for us to sell. Alternatively, we’ll happily arrange collection if you’re unable to come in person.

Some of you in the village will already be familiar with our charity, Action for Animals. To date we’ve funded two neutering schemes here in Competa to help keep the cat population under control and have also provided financial assistance to help local people pay for essential operations needed by their beloved pets. We’ve also financed fostering for animals awaiting adoption and have donated to the animal shelter in Almuñecar. We’re hoping that the new shop will raise funds for us to continue and expand our important work.

Action for Animals is a British registered charity, set up in 1997 by Nina Downes, after a harrowing stint as a volunteer at Noah's Ark Animal Shelter in Crete. Unlike animal shelters in Britain, Noah's Ark was struggling to provide even the most basic needs of adequate food and shelter for the 600 animals there. Something had to be done to help.

Nina's plan was not only to help finance the work being carried out at Noah's Ark, but to start a charity that would strive to prevent suffering and promote kindness to all animals abroad. Since then we’ve managed to raise tens of thousands of pounds for animals all over the world.

Before moving to Spain, Nina was Head of Retail for Notting Hill Housing Trust, responsible for a total of 30 charity shops in London. She has a wealth of experience in the charity sector and is confident that she can make the new Action for Animals shop a resounding success.

But we desperately need your help! We urgently need any unwanted clothes, bric-a-brac, toys, and books – in fact anything at all we can sell to raise funds. You can drop into the shop with your goods to donate, or, if you prefer, you can telephone Nina to arrange collection.

We look forward to seeing you!
