twentyfive years at Decotta

In 1983, John De Cotta a dual qualified English barrister and Spanish abogado of Anglo Portuguese descent and Jaime Santafe a Spanish abogado met and decided to work together as lawyers in Madrid.

After three successful years they then decided to open an office on the Costa del Sol as they believed and recognised that the coast would become increasingly popular with national and international tourists and residents. As one of the first firms to offer English and Spanish legal advice they were uniquely placed to work with the growing number of English speaking clients moving to, and doing business in, Southern Spain. The journey between Madrid was becoming shorter due to the improvements in the transport links and the Costa was changing rapidly.

John De Cotta moved from Madrid to Mijas Costa. In those days it was a partnership and with John's contacts at the Inns of Court in London and his reputation as a hard working and serious Anglo-Spanish lawyer ever increasing, the firm soon began to build up a solid client base of national and international clients. Due to the success of the partnership, John incorporated a company in 2001. As he had fond memories of his Irish grandmother he used her maiden name, McKenna, to add some international spice to the firm and De Cotta McKenna y Santafe was born. Since those early days the Firm has increased in size and added more lawyers from international backgrounds and now has four offices in Spain located in Mijas-Costa, Coin, Nerja & Tenerife. Sadly John passed away in 2002 and Jaime now works as a consultant tapping into his large network of contacts in Madrid to the benefit of the Firm and its clients.
To celebrate the 25th year of providing legal services the Firm will embark on a year of raising funds and assisting charities local to the offices.
