cómpeta is best known to many for it’s locally produced wine, available both dry and sweet, as well as being plentiful and cheap. One of the most popular annual fiesta’s in Cómpeta is the Noche del Vino (Night of the Wine). On the 15th of August it features a program of flamenco and sevillana music and dance plus plenty of free flowing wine!

The event pays homage to the town’s patron saint
Nuestra Senora de la Asuncion, and is traditionally a day to make merry before the harvest begins. But since 1974 and thanks to a local man, Aurelio Fernandez Navas, who started the practice of dispensing free samples of the local wine to revelers, it has become one of the Axarquia’s most important yearly events.

In the fiesta, which is declared to be of National Tourist Interest in Andalucia, traditional
activities such as the foot treading of the locally collected grapes is carried out in the wine press in the Plaza de la Vendimia. It is an ideal day out and to discover how wine is made and to enjoy the local food.

Over 300 litres of oil will be on hand to prepare migas, the traditional dish made out of fried breadcrumbs with which to soak up the alcohol.
Cómpeta sees more than 1,500 litres of wine shared out to the 3,500 visitors who enjoy the day each year and relive one of the most deeply rooted traditions of Cómpeta.

Below you will find the program for the day and evening. Please also turn over to find out what bars and restaurants are around to eat and drink in throughout the day.
