Come and join us for Competa’s ninth annual Walk for Life on Sunday, 01 June, 2014.
The idea first started in 2006 after talking to friends who had also lost family and friends to cancer. A couple of us were planning to fly back to the UK to participate in “Race for Life” in aid of Cancer Research UK but decided we preferred to do a local fundraising event in Spain.
“Race for Life” started in 1994 with just one race in Battersea Park, London. It is now one of the UK’s largest fundraising events and this year has 300 events across the UK. During the twenty years, over six million people have participated and raised over £493 million.
Although my Competa “ Walk for Life” is not on the scale of “Race for Life” – we have grown year on year starting with 12 to over 60 walkers in 2013, having raised over 29,000 euros for Cudeca Cancer Care.
Cudeca Cancer Care is a charitable organisation that provides palliative care to the terminally ill cancer sufferers within the province of Malaga. It is made up of a team of specialist doctor and nurses who provide care and attention to those who need it with support to the family during treatment and after the loss of a loved one. This care is completely free of charge for all their services; the In-patient Hospice and Day Care Centre in Benalmadena or the home visits within Malaga province. Cudeca receives very little public funding, instead they entirely depend on initiatives for raising money to ensure they can continue to provide the “special kind of caring” to those who need specialist palliative care.
Again, this year there is a choice of three walks for you to enjoy;-
1) 5km walk around the village of Competa starting from The Mirador.
2& 3 A four or five hour walk kindly arranged by Joost Schepel of Walk in Spain from Puerto del Collado, see website for map www.walkspain.co.uk/day-for-life Both of these walks which are relatively flat, are suitable for people of all ages, will be led by a qualified, experienced English speaking guide.
None of our walks charge a fee, all I please ask is that you obtain as much sponsorship money as possible or alternatively make a donation on the day.
