A Voder Lymphatic massage at the Rebeccah Curtis Wellbeing Centre
I don't enter health centres; I don't have a beauty regime, as far as I am concerned they are for women. So what am I doing here at the Rebeccah Curtis Wellbeing Centre, I don't want to be here and I feel somehow I have been press-ganged into it (my wife agreed to it on my behalf). The only reason I have followed it through was because The Vodder Lymphatic Drainage Massage appointment was a gift, and it might be fun, and ultimately there could be some health benefits.
Anyway, I enter the Wellbeing Centre and I am surprised that I don't feel too out of place; a man is in the waiting room, and a man has just come out from one of the treatment rooms. There is a woman having her nails done, but so far I am OK and beginning to adjust to the idea of being here.
Mercedes the massage practitioner welcomes me into her room and asks me a couple of health questions and then due to the fact that she is Spanish and my Spanish is basic, I didn't do any talking from then onwards. This I found a real benefit, as I didn't feel I had to make small talk as she went about her work and I could really try and relax. The tinkly music in the background, which on first hearing was not my bag, is now proving beneficial in helping me relax, in fact I am beginning to quite like it!
Mercedes started first on my neck with flat hands using all her fingers to simulate wave like movements. The pressure she applied was neither strong nor soft but both gentle and hard enough for me to feel she was doing something. These subtle movements are to re-activate the lymphatic flow, which has the following benefits:
· Removes metabolic waste, excess water, toxins, bacteria and foreign substances from the tissues.
· Alleviates pain by reducing pain signals to the brai.
· Relaxes the sympathetic nervous system, thus helping to relieve stress.
· Supports and enhances the action of the immune system.
· Helps the body to heal more quickly after an injury or surgery.
· Minimizes scar formation.
It has also proven beneficial for treatment of allergies, skin problems-acne, fibromyalgia, and other conditions ranging from stress-related disorders to autoimmune reactions. I am not sure I need help in the above areas although I do know I need to learn to relax sometimes. Mercedes then moved from my neck down my front with the same movement and then asked me to turnover where once again the same pressure and movement was applied on my back down to the small of my back. Considering I wasn't relaxed when I went in, I certainly was now. I didn't think about work or anything and what I really wanted to do was go to sleep. In fact, I am not sure when she finished and at what point she left the room, as when she came back in, I assume after a few minutes, I jumped awake.
I thanked Mercedes and left feeling very different to when I walked in, a feeling I can't describe really; tired, relaxed and different. Even later that evening the feeling of relaxation and I suppose well being hadn't left me, something had definitely worked for me. Would I have it again? The answer is definitely yes, but I wouldn't shout about it!
