Trap-Neuter-Return is a management plan in which stray and feral cats already living outdoors are humanely trapped, then evaluated and sterilized by veterinarians. The best possible scenario is that kittens and tame cats might then be adopted into good homes. Healthy adult cats unsocialized to humans are returned to their familiar habitat under the lifelong care of volunteers, who feed them on a daily basis.
Where do feral cats come from?
Feral cats are the 'wild' offspring of domestic cats and are primarily the result of pet owners' abandonment or failure to spay and neuter their animals, allowing them to breed uncontrolled. Feral cat 'colonies' can be found behind shopping areas or businesses, in alleys, parks, abandoned buildings, and rural areas. They are elusive and do not trust humans.
In an effort to address this problem, Action for Animals recently offered a half price neutering scheme in Cómpeta to encourage pet owners to have their pets spayed. To date, we have funded neutering operations for over 70 animals here in the village. We are now focusing on our neutering scheme for the feral cats. Studies have proven that trap-neuter-release is the single most successful method of stabilizing and maintaining healthy feral cat colonies at minimum cost, while providing the best life for the animals themselves
