This month, as we’re into the kids’ summer holidays, we’re reviewing books which might keep them quiet for a few hours, or even days and give you some peace!
The first is one, which even adults might enjoy and learn something from, is Why Is Snot Green? by Glen Murphy of The Science Museum in London.
The title clearly grabs you’re attention but the book answers all those questions you were afraid to ask. They include the title question as well as how big is the universe and what happens if you sneeze and fart at the same time?! Come on, you always wondered! The book is effectively a collection of mini articles answering science based questions and is broken down into sections. It is written in a way which is an imagined dialogue with the reader.
The way the science is explored and explained is done so as to be interesting and not patronising and settles down to a fun read at a rapid pace. The book gets by without any pictures but there are enough surprises to keep the reader entertained and is a good introduction to science for kids – and perhaps some adults too!!
Jacky Daydream is the latest book by Jacqueline Wilson and in many ways is autobiographical as it reflects on her childhood from birth (great memory!) to the end of her primary school. As with her other books it is written demonstrating how perfectly in tune she is with her inner child. She deals with sensitive issues with an innocent tone, such as her parents’ extra-marital affairs.
At the end of each chapter she links it to something or someone in one of her books, connecting her fiction with the facts that inspired it. A must for Wilson fans!
Double or Die is Charlie Higson’s latest in the Young Bond series. It is an adventure of the mind where the young Bond and his friends must decrypt puzzles and clues sent by a kidnapped professor. The tale moves at a screaming pace along with the action described, including finding a dead professor, a car chase and the fiery finale. The timeframe of the story is an action packed weekend making it unique amongst Bond novels. With plenty of gore, villains and the arrival of a Bond Girl late in the story, this book won’t disappoint both the Young Bond fans and maybe the older Fleming Bond fans too! Keep Dad away from this one!!
