Recently a couple stayed at the Hotel Balcon in Competa. They were so delighted with the facilities and service they felt compelled to write to The Grapevine Magazine with a review of their visit.
We arrived at the Balcon about 3.00pm on a Tuesday in late November to stay for three nights (this was to be followed with a later longer visit). When I arrived we realised we had not booked a superior room which we normally do and this was my mistake. So we stayed for the first time in a standard double room with a balcony overlooking the valley and Mediterranean. This was absolutely adequate if not good especially considering the more than reasonable price.
The hotel itself is a 3 star hotel but to me I reckon its worth at least another half star. It has a tennis court, swimming and paddling pools, an outside bar in the summer, a reception, great terrace, restaurant, cafe bar, lounge, two lifts and of course the important free wi fi.
It is worth mentioning the hotel bar and restaurant is closed on a Wednesday, after breakfast, in order that the staff have a well earned rest. However, there are several restaurants in close proximity even one directly next door where we had some lovely meals. Additionally there is a very well equipped small convenience store opposite and a take- away fish and chip shop about two minutes walk away.
As we are frequent visitors to the area we have seen the hotel improve their facilities every year. This year, for example, an easy entry chair into the swimming pool for people who have difficulties has been installed. Also, the electric gate can now be operated from your phone which gains clients access to the hotel, chalets and a very good car park.
Breakfast was included in the price of our stay, it is both continental and English, served from about 8.00am to 10.30am but they are not pedantic. Hot food is replenished, they also cook to order. Personally I particularly loved the fresh orange.
After a stay with family in the area, we returned about 9 days later in order to stay for another 7 nights. On arrival we were offered a free upgrade to a superior double bedroom with balcony on the first floor with the same fantastic views. ln my opinion it is worth the few extra euros. The rooms and en suite have been refurbished. Chairs both on the balcony and inside are padded. Electric kettle, tea and coffee are supplied. The few extra euros are worth spending.
Howver, I have saved the best to last, the staff, each and everyone, were just great. Whilst I do know many names it would be unfair to the others if I named them. Everyone was so nice and tried their very best.
Some examples:
Luggage taken to our car.
Free tapas on several occasions.
A menu brought from the restaurant next door which we ordered from and it was brought to us in the bar of the hotel.
When the bar was closed on a Wednesday, we purchased a couple of cans from the convenience store and consumed them in the lounge.
We were given glasses from the bar in the hotel and they opened the bar for us to have another couple of drinks before going out for dinner
Always happy and attentive.
In conclusion, in my opinion, this is an extremely good 3 star hotel with 5 star people. I hope they all have a fantastic Christmas and prosperous New Year.
