Many people have the idea that “Family law” is for those divorcing or separating and the difficulties of finance. However, the range of family law is much wider. DMS deal with Spanish and UK work adoption, parenting, maintenance, custody, guardianship and financial settlements.
In Spain & the islands there are many people who came to retire many years ago and may now need help in dealing with their affairs. As well as parents there can be aunts, uncles and grandparents who need support. Often people need to talk to a lawyer about being a Guardian or tutela to help with their relatives´ finances and property.
For most people Christmas is a time for sharing gifts and enjoyment. Sadly for some it can be a time of stress when couples, families and parents find it hard to cope. In some cases a talk with a professional about the difficulties can prevent things getting worse and give help with money worries and practical problems.
Financial worries come when couples, married or living together, don’t know where they stand if they decide to separate. It is never too early to take sound practical advice on joint property, bank accounts and pensions.
One area that is still very different in the two jurisdictions of England and Spain is that of pension entitlement for divorcing couples. Pension legislation in the UK is complex and it is important to get legal advice before, not after, going to the courts.
