The 49 year old Briton, Stephen Mallon, who has been in a coma in the Carlos Haya Hospital in Málaga for the past 12 days after being involved in a large street fight in the village of Cómpeta has died. Doctors say that he had been in a deep coma, and was declared to be brain dead at 1030 on Wednesday morning.
He failed to recover after falling from a five metre high wall close to the a local disco pub, ‘La Estrella’, in the early hours of Saturday June 6th, after going to help his 16 year old son and nephew who had got involved in what is described as a mass fight between Spanish and foreign youths, with as many as 30 people, most aged between 16 and 18, involved.
There are several versions as to how the fight started, but Diario Sur reports that the 16 year old son and nephew of the victim were flirting with two local girls when the ex boyfriend of one of them arrived and started to be aggressive. Stephen Mallon is said to have gone to help and soon there was a group of some seven Britons against a dozen or so locals.
Some witnesses say the victim was hit over the head with a bottle and was unconscious when pushed over the wall of the terrace, falling some five metres. Others say he was not pushed but simply fell during the fight.
Typically Spanish has been told that the police took some time to arrive at the scene and also that the medics were not initially allowed out of the ambulance.
Investigations continue into the case, amid reports that the villagers have proved to be reluctant in coming forward with witness reports, and as yet no arrest has been made.
The case is now in the hands of the Homicides Department of the Guardia Civil Judicial Police, who have already taken statements from many youngsters in the village.
The Mallon family have been spending their holidays in Cómpeta for the past five years, and had been celebrating a birthday on the night of the tragedy.
An autopsy is being carried out by the Legal Medicine Institute in Málaga.
