A new social group has started in the small town of Periana. Called ‘Periana Stitchers’, they are a “group of ladies who love to stitch”. The group meet every Monday afternoon in a town house belonging to one of the members. The basic aim of the group is for the free exchange of ideas and to encourage and inspire each other in various forms of needlecraft. The group is non-profit making with a small weekly charge to cover expenses. The group also maintains a small collection of quilting tools, which members can either use during the meetings, or borrow for use at home.
The group came into being back in October 2006 when Jan and Rachel met and decided to get together every week to stitch and chat. Over the months that followed, other members, with a wide variety of stitching interest have joined. These include members who spend half of their time back in their “home” countries. The group have now reached the stage where they have their own website on which to display their work and make contact with other quilters around the World.
The meetings enable the exchange of ideas in a ‘fun’ environment – helped, naturally enough, by tea and cakes. Some members of the group have skills in other forms of needlework and crafts (including beading), and it is hoped that at future meetings these skills can be demonstrated to the members of the group. The group also organise day trips and, occasionally, longer breaks including a forthcoming trip to Morocco. Whilst in Morocco the group will take the opportunity to look at the wide range of fabrics available in that country,
The groups’ current project is a beginner’s sampler patchwork quilt, which is quite a challenge for some of the members who have never tried patchwork before!
Future projects for the group will include a charity quilt, which will be auctioned by the local cancer charity (Cudeca). Every member of the group will piece at least one block of the quilt.
The group caters for all levels of expertise – from complete beginners to quilters with considerable experience. New members are welcome, so if you have an interest in quilting or any other form of stitching; or would like to give it a go but are worried that you would not be able to do it – come along to our meetings. We guarantee you a warm welcome and for those of you who doubt your ability – don’t, you can do it and we will show you how.
