Sponsored by Albergue 'Casa de la Mina'. In support of Cudeca and Cancer Research UK. Cancer touches many of us and so when my stepfather was diagnosed earlier this year, my family felt that they needed to turn what could be a negative situation into something positive. So, on Sunday June 3rd, my mother and two younger sisters are taking part in Race for Life, an annual UK wide fund raising event organised by Tesco and Cancer Research UK www.cancerresearchuk.org in London.
I cannot be there with them, so I thought that I could organise a simultaneous event here in Competa. What started as a personal endeavour has grown into what I hope to be a wonderfully positive and enjoyable family day out. With the help of my friend and neighbour Gemma Edelman we hope to raise as much money as we can for Cudeca and Cancer Research UK.
The walk will start from the Viewing Point (Portichello) in Competa at 11am and we will follow the road up to Casa de la Mina.
For those wanting to take part but feel that the whole walk may be a little too much for them then I suggest driving up to Puerto del Collado altitude 860m (approx halfway where you can park) thus avoiding the climb up. The walk from there is straightforward even for those with children.
On arrival at the wonderfully tranquil location of Albergue 'Casa de la Mina' owner Ulla Eggers has very generously offered to provide everyone a welcoming glass of Champagne, or orange juice for the healthier among us and a giant paella at just 7euros per person. We will also be treated to some Live Music and traditional Spanish Horsemen and maybe a surprise or two so she tells me! The location also lends itself to bringing a picnic with lots of outdoor seating space, which is ideal for those with children.
I am contacting local radio and press, so please do your bit and spread the word to friends and neighbours, turn up, make a donation and help make this a day that Competa and all its residents will remember. Who knows, this may well turn into an annual event.
