An interview with Jose, ex-priest in Competa running for Mayor.

What is your full name?
My full name is Jose Luis Torres Gutierrez

Where were you born?
I was born in Ronda in Andalusia.

Where did you live before coming to Cómpeta?
I was born in Ronda and lived there for seventeen years.  I then went to university in Granada.  Following that I went to the seminary in Malaga before coming to Cómpeta.

What is your favourite food?
I like everything!  But if I was to mention a few I would have to say Spanish omelette and I have a very sweet tooth!

What is your favourite country you have visited?
My favourite country is Spain of course!  However I have visited many countries. As a tourist I've been to USA and Venezuela.  I have also been fortunate to visit many countries in my capacity as a priest such as Italy, France, Egypt, Israel and Jordan.

How long have you been a priest?

For eight years.

Why the change from priest to politician?
I want to dedicate my time to others.  I want to involve myself on a more global level within the community and tackle issues I could not be involved with as a priest.  The time seems right now as I know the town and its people well and they know me.

Is the church supportive of your decision to run for Mayor?

The church respects my decision however they are not in favour of my decision to run for mayor.  They think I am a good priest and do not want to loose me.

If you are elected what sort of changes will you make?

So many!  Cómpeta needs a better infrastructure such as improved sports amenities, theatres and museums.  I want to develop our services for example the security and cleanliness of Cómpeta.  I want to advance the whole of Cómpeta's environment by supporting tourism, local agriculture, via grants for olives and vines and improving the lives of our townsfolk by providing courses.

What do you think makes you a good candidate for Mayor?
I am young, enthusiastic and well educated. I have a real desire to work.  I ask for all your support to make this dream a reality and before you know it Cómpeta will become a place more than you could have ever dreamt of.

Who is opposing you?
There are three other parties; one candidate representing PSOE, one from the PA (Partida Andalucia) and finally and independent candidate backed by local businessmen and builders.

As a priest you were very involved within the local community, will you continue to play such a hands on role if you were elected Mayor?
This would be a change in career for me but I will always remain the same person.  If elected I will be a Mayor dedicated to all the people of Cómpeta, and I feel that I will be able to serve them in greater ways and do so much more.

If elected, after four years do you intend to return to the priesthood or will you go up for re-election?
I think I will return to the priesthood at some point, but as yet I do not know when.

If you are not elected what will you do?
I will work for Cómpeta but in opposition to the elected party.
