Simon Fonseca, with his Mother, and Uncle, are the proprietors of the "Sunrise Beach Bistro". It's prime location is on the beach front in Torre del Mar, where in the daytime you can relax and eat with perfect views of the sun shimmering over the Mediterranean, or of an evening watch a glorious sunset as you partake in a glass of wine and a sumptuous dinner. Also, during the Winter months you will be warm and dry, as it is fully insulated for your comfort
Simon lives in Almayate and moved to Spain 4 years ago with his family he has a little girl and another baby on the way. The family have been running Sunrise beach for 14 months now but it originally started as a Sports Bar. This was the legacy of the previous owners and at the time of taking over it seemed appropriate with the World Cup a few months away, to keep the bar as a Sports Bar. However once the World Cup finished they wanted to install their own ideas and the bar changed from Sports Bar to Bistro with a menu to match. This coincided with Graham a well known fantastic chef from Alcaucin starting to work with them in the kitchen and so the Sports Bar turned into a Bistro with a new look, new menu, new chef and they haven’t looked back since.
The atmosphere is relaxed with no gimmicks just good food. Their specials menu changes weekly to ensure their large amount of regular customers always have something new to try. However, Simon keeps the traditional Fish menu for Friday nights and always has a good selection of dishes on the children’s menu. My children ate at Sunrise and managed to eat all the fish dippers expressing their delight with the food. For my kids they only seem to delight in playing up when we go out for lunch so it was pleasurable experience for the whole family to eat together. The adults in the group all ordered something different from surf and turf, gammon, prawn stir fry, shank of lamb to warm peppered mackerel. This really does show the diversity on the menu and all the food came out looking delicious and well presented. Some of us also ordered deserts which were homemade choosing Banoffee Pie, Jam sponge and custard and crumble. Most of the family couldn’t find space for a desert but looked longingly on those that did!
Having visited Simon regularly over the last few months for advert changes, I always seem to arrive on a Sunday, and Sunrise Bistro is always packed with people ordering Lunch. For 9.95 euro you have a choice of 4 meats with Yorkshire pudding and all the trimmings. Booking is highly recommended and they serve from 13.00 to 18.30pm. The only complaint they get is there is too much food on the plate for some!
During the month of December you will be able to sample their pre-Christmas dinner, consisting of 3 courses for 12.95 euro, choose from a starter of Soup of the Day or Prawn Cocktail, main course Roast Turkey or Pork with all the trimmings, dessert, either Christmas Pudding or Mince Tart and Custard.
Simon and his family are really making a success of their business, and hope to build it's reputation so that it becomes a renowned restaurant that is talked about and is referred to only as " The Bistro " and everyone one will know where they mean.
